Are You And Your Spouse On The Same Team?

Are you and your spouse on the same team?

I was watching a Netflix special on football players and their season. I love football, mostly because it was a great way to bond with my family growing up, and I love sports. I may not know all the stats because I haven’t faithfully watched in a while. My husband does not watch sports (I know this is a shocker for most), and I’m the one who does. I will also never claim I know all the rules, especially considering our Canadian football is a bit different than American football. And then Europeans, well they call soccer football, so there’s that!

But what I observed in watching the series was how the spouses and partners not only cheered on their players, but they also celebrated their achievements. They committed emotionally to their wins and losses. The players spoke highly of their support and their families. They became better players, they had a safe place to rest after the game, and they had unconditional support. Win or lose. The cheering spouses were also congratulated after their husbands made a winning play.

Win or lose, your spouse needs you to support them. They need that safe place, and you will be praised by others for the love you give. You will be a winner alongside them when they experience a victory, and you will also receive empathy when there is a loss (maybe even be blamed, just as they may be blamed). But when you shoulder the wins and losses together, you can look over the game you played and be proud of the strength and determination you had in executing the plays, seeing how it worked and what you can do differently next time.

Someone might be able to beat up one of you, but not both of you. As the saying goes, “A rope made from three strands of cord is hard to break.” Ecclesiastes 4:12 (CEV)
